“Omizutori” in Nigatsudo Hall of Todai-ji Temple new

January, 10th, 2016 (Sun.) 3:00 pm~4:30 pm

“Omizutori” is a famous ceremony that for 1200 years has heralded spring to Nara, the ancient capital of Japan. The ritual - officially called “Shuni-e” - is conducted every year at the Nigatsudo Hall of Todai-ji Temple and its origins are traditionally traced back to Jitchu, a senior disciple of Roben, the founder of Todai-ji itself. Because the ritual began on the first day of the second month according to the lunar calendar, it was named “Shuni-e” (a shortened way of saying ‘a ritual conducted in the second month’). The hall’s name of “Nigatsudo” (meaning ‘hall of the second month’) also derives from this ceremony.
We are pleased to invite the Chief Secretary of Nara’s Todai-ji Temple and Buddhist priest Shoshu Hiraoka to talk about the traditional ritual of “Omizutori” which has been observed for over 1260 years since the Tempyo Era.
